Behind the Seams ✂️🧵

Hello lovely reader!

Has your quilty journey of late been lacking in inspiration? Feeling a loss of sewjo perhaps, or that dreadful ennui of not knowing what project to make next? Well, allow your friends here at Make Modern to step in and help.

To put it simply, you have the fabric, we have the patterns! Ten of them in fact! Brand new patterns in our brand new issue of the magazine! I won't overwhelm you with allll the projects, but consider this a taster plate (a charcuterie of quilt patterns if you will!)

Allow us to whet your appetite with a close up look of our cover quilt. Meet Summer in the City, designed by Siobhan Fitzpatrick of Create Make Design 365.

While we're delving into those lovely rich, warm tones, here are another two quilt patterns featuring geometric shapes and shades of oranges and yellows mixed with other fabrics.

Left is Tug of War by Sindhu Aragam of Creative Clutter Room and right is Versailles by Anke B Calzada (with photo backdrop care of the actual Versailles!).

Not had enough yet? Okay let's tempt you with two more bright and beautiful patterns! Left is Brighton by Preeti Harris of Sew Preeti Quilts, and right is Fantasy Flowers by Pat Forster.

Appetite still not satisfied? Jump on in and grab the full issue of Make Modern 63 and you can get all ten patterns and start making your to-do list!

Each issue we chat to incredible makers from around the world. Here's who we interviewed for the current issue!

Carli Marsico from United States

@guilty_quilty

As an engineer, Carli’s brain is naturally wired for the challenges of quilting. “I'm an engineer throughout and through. I always want to understand how things work, learn new things, and figure out ways to make them more efficient. This is true of my quilting as well. I love almost every part of the process and experimenting with new ways to make it easier, faster, or more precise. There’s something just so methodical and geometric about quilting that satisfies the OCD part of my engineering brain. Over time, that’s morphed into technical editing services to support other pattern designers. I love helping designers make their beautiful patterns even better, but I still like to design a pattern of two of my own occasionally.”

Peter Byrne from Canada

@petersquilts

Previously a hair stylist/salon owner, upon retirement in 2016, Peter decided to dive full on into a new challenge – quilting! “When I retired after 30 years, I decided to take on a new adventure, so at the beginning of January 2017, I joined The Toronto Modern Quilt Guild and when I attended my first meeting, I had never quilted a quilt!” he says of his first forays into quilting.

However, he treated his new passion as a job, with an intense apprenticeship. “That year, I took on quilting full-time and did a deep dive, taking over 100 online quilting classes and practising building my free motion quilting skills for hours everyday. Right from the start it was all systems go!”

Hello quilty friend!There's a saying that pops up whenever quilting and sewing memes are created - "I cannot count my day complete until needle, thread and fabrics meet". We may not know who originally coined the phrase, but I think we can all relate! While sometimes we don't actually get to the fabric-meet-needle point, I think it still counts when we're thinking about our next project or reading something that inspires us to get creative! As creative people, it's a bit of a necessity. So...
