Behind the Seams ✂️🧵

Hello Reader,

We shared our big, and sad, news last week that we will wrapping up Make Modern at the end of the year. All good things must come to an end, as they say. But it doesn't mean we'll be finishing out our year quietly. We still have a bunch of inspiration and quilty goodness to share with - plus another four issues still to come!

We hit publish on our most recent mag, Issue 69, and we wanted to share what you can find in the 100+ pages in case you're looking for your next read!

Let's start at the beginning with the cover.

Reverberate by Kelli Marshall, features rainbow hues paired with a fresh white and it makes for a sweet quilt that would be the perfect gift for a new baby or a beautiful wallhanging! While you could use a single collection like Kelli did, it would also be a fantastic scrapbuster!

We are not lacking big bold colour in our patterns this issue either. Whether it's big bright and bright or a sweet pastel pairing of colours.

Frank's Cabin (left) by Abigail Kelly is a modern spin on the classic log cabin style, pairing appliqued circles, black sashing and rich ombre berry palette. Combine all of that for a stunning quilt!

Dream Weave (right) by Lindsay Upiter is an eye catching quilt that features 10" squares, making it stitch up fast! Plus that large scale give a big impact.

Because we like to have something for everyone, we also have quilts made with limited palettes and gosh do they pack a punch!

Still Between (left) by Taina de Paula makes a classic sampler quilt modern by creating a variety of patchwork blocks in a simple two-toned colour scheme. The mixing up of block sizes and the layout of the blocks creates additional interest and adds to the modern feel.

Woven Lattice (right) by Tamsyn Armstrong is the sort of project that will appeal to the minimalist or traditionalist - and it'll never go out of style. The design is crisp and clean with the combination of identical blocks in two colourways creating a lil extra oomph.

So whatcha think? Found a project that tickles your fancy? Go on and click this button and make Issue 69 yours!

Each issue we chat to incredible makers from around the world. Issue 69 features talented quilters Lindsay Upiter and Heather Davis!

Lindsay Upiter from Canada

@aurorahollychildrens

Lindsay started with a desire to quilt when she discovered a quilt pattern that motivated her to give it a try. "Only in the last year has my quilting world really expanded. I wanted to make a butterfly quilt for my daughter and I knew that I would need to learn FPP to design and make it. I loved the design process so much. It was like a giant puzzle for my brain - and I love puzzles - so since then I have been hooked on making my own designs."

Heather Davis from United States

@heatherdavishandmade

Quilting has been a part of Heather Davis's life for as long as she can remember, so perhaps it was inevitable that she became a quilter herself. "I grew up surrounded by quilts, so I've honestly never known a time without them. Quilting was always part of my world - both my mother and my grandmother quilted throughout my life. In my twenties, I was finally ready to sit down and learn, so my grandmother, Vandilla, taught me."

We're also sharing a whole bunch of articles, columns and features to inspire the mind as well as the quilting!

  • Ange Wilson of GnomeAngel talks all things books and quilts - sharing some of her favourite book themed patterns
  • Tara Miller of Quilt District, dives deep into the idea of modern quilts before modern quilting, reflecting on antique and vintage quilt designs
  • Sarah Ashford suggests we slow it down and set some time aside for those slower paced hobbies in this fast paced world
  • Eva Saunders chats about the decision process involved in the pursuit of creativity (that is, making a quilt!)
