Behind the Seams ✂️🧵

Hello lovely reader!

Just popping into your inbox to say hi! Well that and to say "hey have you checked out Issue 66 yet?" Because if you're looking for some quilty goodness, you really ought to.

I love a bit of a glimpse into what's included in a magazine or book - or a listen to the trailer for an audiobook - I mean you have to check out if you like the narrator's style before committing to hours of listening, right?! While there's no narrator voice to Make Modern, we can give you our version of a trailer by showing you some of the goodies we have waiting in the pages of our newest issue. Photos incoming!

Let's start at the beginning with the cover.

Meet Rainbow Garden, designed by Karen Bolan. Nothing beats the cheer of a classic rainbow quilt, except when it's made with easy-peasy construction as well!

Our amazing designers create their quilts using palettes that they love. I often marvel at how we find a similar theme come in, even without planning. Like this cheerful orange that showed up in a couple of projects in Issue 66!

Pulsate (left) is by Jennifer Marks and it's a clever combination of similar blocks - a pinwheel built with flying geese. The interest comes from the variation of sizes in the central print square in each block which creates a pulsating effect when viewed as a whole.

Heartfelt (right) by Pat Forster is made with hourglass blocks in three sizes, including fabrics in different shades of orange and yellow solids, and a cream print for the background. It pops in warm tones but would be equally gorgeous in cool colours (or a scrappy rainbow!).

Pink gets a nod this issue too! Our designers must have have that warm tone theme in mind when creating these beauties.

Pixel Plaid (left) by Tiffany Horn features gelato hued pastels and a plaid design giving seersucker vibes. It'd make the perfect picnic quilt, or drape it over a sofa to add a cotton candy sweetness to your home decor.

Tessa (right) by Shereece Nicole is a big bold geometric quilt that'll never go out of style. This clever design combines three blocks in an ombre colour scheme. Make it in your fave colour or choose prints instead - the 10" whole blocks are a great way to show off a large scale favourite print.

That's just half the project goodness for Issue 66! We'll talk about the other five projects next newsletter - or you could just grab a copy of Issue 66 and see for yourself. Why wait when you can get the newest issue and start sewing today?

Each issue we chat to incredible makers from around the world. In Issue 66, our editor Jane delves into the quilty lives of Eva Saunders (also our newest columnist!) as well as Maggie Reno.

Eva Saunders from United States

@gingerlyquiltco

Eva's quilt journey started with learning from her grandmother and then rekindled during the pandemic. After that revisit to quilting, Eva's love was set. It wasn't long before Eva - who has a background in graphic design and art - was designing her own patterns, which is how Gingerly Quilt Co was born. "I wanted to continue making modern designs with a whimsical twist - pizzas, cats, and terazzo tile were my first inspirations. After the first few years, my art degree came through and I experimented with some more organic and free flowing designs. I'm always inspired by art and pop culture."

Maggie Reno from United States

@snugandstitch

You could say fabric and quilting is in Maggie Reno's genes... from learning to hand quilt from her grandmothers, to being a distant relative of the Liberty of London family, it seems Maggie was destined to become a quilter. Nowadays she's created a business from her quilting that reflects her style. "I design quilt patterns under the brand Snug & Stitch. I begin with a block idea and play with layouts, adding in other blocks and trying out fabrics until the design feels right."
