Behind the Seams ✂️🧵

Hello Reader,

We Aussies have been melting through a heatwave this week - which means a lil extra time inside in the air conditioning - and what better way to spend time than sew! Particularly with a brand new issue of Make Modern, there's inspiration galore for us to get stuck into.

So let's have a chat about what Issue 68 has waiting for you in it's 100+ pages!

We're going to start at the beginning with our beautiful cover quilt, Summer Sway, designed by Tristan Parker. It's a clever design featuring one block repeated, with a simple colour scheme in rich, warm solids. The end result is a showstopper of a quilt packed with simple style.

This issue is chockfull of colour - so I thought we'd highlight two beautiful blue quilts that appear in this issue.

Brilliant Star (left) by Julia Bennett features beautiful stars - which we all know never go out of style! This bold interpretation of a classic motif would make a perfect child's quilt. It may look complex, but the use of half rectangle triangles (HRTs) makes piecing a breeze.

Tuned In (right) by Jamie Siel is proof that inspiration can come from the most unlikeliest of places. Jamie was inspired by a tuning fork, of all things! Using bold solids, with a white strip to tie everything together, this quilt just sings bright and modern.

Perhaps earthy tones are more your thing. In that case, check out these pretties just waiting in Issue 68!

That 70s Quilt (left) by Dewald Compion is taking us back in time with a bold twist. This modern FPP pattern is a groovy nod to the vibrant energy of the 1970s. This pattern is all about playful geometry and feel-good vibes.

Harlequin Hexies (right) by Pat Forster is a clever approach to creating a quilt using english paper piecing. Create a series of shapes and applique them onto individual blocks - suddenly this is a very accessible project. It's perfect for portability and also an ideal scrapbuster.

Each issue we chat to incredible makers from around the world. Issue 68 features talented quilters Lauren Metang and

Lauren Metang from United States

@palm_creations

Lauren has many more patterns in the works, and continues to forge the link between quilts and books. "I have so many ideas for quilt designs and I just need to sit down and write them. I have been building my business to be a bridge between reading and quilting and it's so fun to share the love of learning and quilting with people new to the craft."

Rebecca Cynamon-Murphy from United States

@cynamonmurphy

Rebecca realised she was hooked on quilting when she discovered quilting was a way to present her message to the world. "My guild cheered me through making my Crush the Patriarchy quilt using Tanya Ricucci's lettering method whold on reatreat, then it was accepted into the MQX show. Feedback from Instagram friends who shared it with non-quilters for its irreverent jab at beauty standards showed me that there was also an audience for what I found personally satisfying."

We're also sharing a whole bunch of articles, columns and features to inspire the mind as well as the quilting!

  • Karen Brown of Just Get It Done Quilts shares a whole bunch of practical tips to create a calm, creative sewing room
  • Quinn Tailor shares their experience of creating a community that felt supportive and encouraged people to be heard when sharing their unique voice

Hello Reader, We shared our big, and sad, news last week that we will wrapping up Make Modern at the end of the year. All good things must come to an end, as they say. But it doesn't mean we'll be finishing out our year quietly. We still have a bunch of inspiration and quilty goodness to share with - plus another four issues still to come! We hit publish on our most recent mag, Issue 69, and we wanted to share what you can find in the 100+ pages in case you're looking for your next read!...

To our dear readers, This isn't our usual newsletter. We wanted to share some news with you directly from the Make Modern team. After more than a decade of sharing quilty inspiration in our pages, Issue 73 (Nov/Dec 2026) will be our final issue. Our team have done lots of talking and planning (and a little crying!) and it's a big decision but we think it’s the right time for us to close this beautiful chapter. That makes this year our final year. But we're not just going to fade out quietly!...

Dear Reader, Hip hip hooray, it's new issue day! Make Modern Issue 69 is here and we are SO excited to share it with you. Over 100 pages full of quilty goodness, ready and waiting! We're joined by Ange Wilson who brings us a gorgeous roundup of book-themed quilt patterns, and Quilt Historian Tara Miller dives deep in her discussion, Modern Before Modern, asking, were the quilters of the 1800s already "modern"? Kicking things off is this gorgeous quilt cover by Kelli Marshall: Rainbow hues...
